Big fourth quarter ends Elk Grove's losing streak
Elk Grove's hopes of breaking a nine-game losing streak didn't look good going into the fourth quarter of Monday night's nonconference boys basketball game at Maine East.
But the Grenadiers (5-16) wiped out an 8-point deficit with a 12-point run and never trailed again in a 55-50 victory in Park Ridge.
"We didn't show up to play," Elk Grove coach Anthony Furman said of a 30-18 halftime deficit where Maine East hit five 3-pointers. "We defended the arc better and offensively we got more aggressive.
"It was a Monday night and we've been in a rut. They showed some good character and it was a good win for them."
John Lorenz (16 points), Austin Amann (15 points) and Justin Flores (13 points) led the Grenadiers to their first win since they beat Tilden 54-45 on Dec. 21. Maine East (3-16) lost its eighth straight game.
