Nation should not be a free for all
I have never written into a newspaper to voice my view or concerns on any issue until now. I read the Dec. 7 column by Ruben Navarrette titled “How GOP could win over Latinos,” His claim that the GOP should voice their concerns about immigration in a different way is exactly why I feel this country is in the trouble it is in.
For too long politicians on both sides are only concerned about how what they say comes across instead of telling the truth and letting the chips fall where they may, all in the name of votes. What is true, right or wrong, takes a back seat to what gets votes. The fact of the matter is, there are millions of illegal immigrants in this country and this should upset any American, not just the GOP. If politicians would have upheld the law, which is what I thought they were all about, we wouldn’t have the illegal immigration problem we have now.
But unfortunately, certain political groups have tried to act as if illegal immigration was OK in hopes of winning favor with family members who lived here legally in hopes of winning their votes.
This kind of pandering for votes can be extremely dangerous to a country’s sovereignty. Many illegals are paid under the table, in which case the government will never see a dime. But yet they benefit in the same manner that all taxpaying Americans do. How is it moral to walk into a health care facility and receive treatment from a system you have paid nothing into? Does the word bankrupt come to mind? Not to mention the question of morality that exists because you broke the law in the first place to get here. This country should not be a free for all.
