D214 holds workshop for parents of special education students
Northwest Suburban High School District 214 offer a free two-part workshop series for parents of special education students in February and March.
The first workshop will provide parents with a better understanding of IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act) and how it applies to the IEP (Individualized Education Program), while the second will help parents communicate more effectively in their children's IEP meetings.
Both workshops will be held at Forest View Educational Center, 2121 S. Goebbert Road, in Arlington Heights.
The first meeting in the theater will be 6:30-8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 15. IDEA ensures families of special education children rights including to have their child assessed or tested to determine their needs, to inspect and review school records relating to their child, to attend an annual IEP meeting and develop a written IEP plan with representatives of the local school district, and to resolve disputes through an impartial process.
The second meeting, about IEPs, will be in Room D100 from 6:30-8 p.m. Tuesday, March 8. Both workshops will be interpreted for the hearing impaired. To register, go to d214.org/educational_services/parent_workshops.aspx, e-mail StudentServices@d214.org or call Laura Faber at (847) 718-7550.
