Prospect tops Elk Grove
After its 45-27 victory over visiting Elk Grove at the Jean Walker Field House, Prospect senior guard Sarah Winans said the Knights girls basketball team just wants to focus on its upcoming conference games.
The Knights’ defense sure was focused at the start of Friday’s Mid-Suburban East game.
Prospect pitched a 14-0 shutout in the opening eight minutes and never looked back while improving to 12-11 and 4-4.
“Our last few games, we haven’t rebounded well and gotten the ball out fast to start our running game,” said Winans, who scored 10 points. “This game, we were able to get into our transition game and everything we had been working on came together.”
Senior center Sarah Hunt led the Knights with 11 points while Michele Molini added 6 with a pair of 3-pointers. Christina Brucci and Jessica Petrovski each chipped in 5.
“Good balanced scoring,” said Knights coach Martha Kelly. “I was very happy with our man-to-man defensive energy in the first quarter. We did a better job of taking care of the basketball and getting more possessions.”
Elk Grove (9-14, 1-7) was led by senior Leah Miller’s 8 points, all in the second half. Sophomore Diamond Boyd hit a 3-pointer in the second quarter for the Grens, who received 5 points apiece from sophomore Kelly Naughton and freshman Melissa Solorio.
Winans scored 8 of her 10 points in the first half which Prospect won 21-10.
“From here on out, we just want to focus on executing our game plan,” Winans said. “We did that tonight and we want to continue doing that.”
