Complaints about reading list are naive

I am writing a letter in response to the article, “Residents: Books on Stevenson High’s reading list offensive” written by Russell Lissau on Dec. 17, which shows the concern of a few parents during a board of education meeting on the content of a few summer reading books for Stevenson’s students.

One parent said these “provocative” books challenged their “traditional values” established in their home. As a student currently attending Stevenson High School, I find this comment extremely ridiculous because it’s only a book, and books are tools to help us learn lessons about the real world in a controlled environment such as a high-school classroom.

I also wonder how oblivious these parents are of the high school environment, because we as students at such a large school such as Stevenson experience many things that are much more “provocative” than a book with a few “X-rated” scenes.
