Your news: Gurnee gymnastics team tops at meet
Submitted by Jane Feely
Records are made to be broken and that’s exactly what happened when the girls from Ultimate Gymnastics traveled to compete in the St Jude Benefit meet in Peoria recently.
It was the Level 7 girls who broke not one but two club records at the competition. As a team, they exceeded the previous club team record by a full point, scoring 115.475. In addition, Waukegan’s Ella Peter smashed the previous club beam record when she scored an impressive 9.80 in the 7- to 11-year-old age group. She equaled this score on floor exercise, bringing home a gold medal in this event and silver in the all-around.
There were other individual successes for the Level 7s, whose achievements came fast on the heels of an excellent showing at the National Judges Cup in Phoenix, Ariz. In the 7-11 age group, there were silver medals for Emily Whitis on floor and for Julia Betman on vault. In the 12-14 age group, Sara Becker came away with two first places: on uneven bars and on floor. Maddie Jacobs turned in a consistent performance to earn three silvers: on bars, floor and in the all-around. Carli Betman took the top spot on beam and Allison O’Connell won bronze on vault.
The Level 5 girls also won a first-place team award. Between them they came away with seven individual gold medals, nine silver and three bronze. In addition, 12 of the girls scored personal bests on at least one event. Nora Steinlein topped the achievements with gold on bars and in the all-around and silver medals on the other events in the 12 and over age group.
Jessica Pasquesi won the all-around, along with silver on bars and floor and bronze on vault in the 10-11 age group while teammate Kylie Skie took first on vault and floor. Grace Miller finished second on floor and in the all-around and placed third on beam. In the youngest age group (7-8 years) Emily Isabelli topped the podium for vault with Olivia Roebuck in second place. Olivia also won gold on floor, scoring 9.25. Aaliyah Humphreys came away with silver in the all-around and a third-place finish on beam.
At Level 9, Emily Basara won vault and floor and placed third in the all-around in the 14 and over age group. Lauren Marshall took silver on beam and bronze on floor in the 9-13 age group.
The Level 6 team finished in third place at the meet. Sonte Turnage came out on top on uneven bars and finished second on floor and in the all-around in the 7-10 age group. There were also medals for Belle Smith (silver) and Brianna Hitchingham (bronze) on vault and a silver for Kylie Miller on floor.
