Mt. Prospect vandalism suspect arrested

Mount Prospect police arrested an 18-year-old village resident Friday in connection with gang-related vandalism in the Randhurst Village area.

Luis Alonso, of the 1100 block of Boxwood Drive, faces seven counts of criminal defacement to property stemming from allegations he spray-painted gang graffiti at the Randhurst Village redevelopment project and throughout the Boxwood neighborhood on Dec. 6

Alonso, whom police described as a known gang member, was questioned about the vandalism while in custody on an unrelated charge, police said.

Further investigation led to the arrest of a second suspect, a Mount Prospect juvenile, who was charged with two counts of criminal defacement to property that also occurred Dec. 6 in the Boxwood neighborhood. The arrests were made by Mount Prospect Police Department's Special Investigation/Gang Intelligence Unit.

“These arrests reinforce the value of the Special Investigation/Gang Intelligence Unit as well as the tenaciousness and intelligence gathering skills of the officers assigned to this unit,” Police Chief John Dahlberg said.

The charges are misdemeanors punishable by a maximum $2,500 fine and a year in jail.

Alonso is set to appear in court Jan. 12. The juvenile was petitioned to the Juvenile Justice Division of Cook County.
