Passengers trapped, I-290 lanes closed due to accident

A Joliet man was in critical condition late Tuesday after a three-vehicle accident Tuesday afternoon on the Eisenhower Expressway extension near Interstate 355.

Itasca Fire Lt. John Radzinski said the call came in at 1:17 for a multiple-car crash requiring an extrication.

A tow truck rear ended a stopped vehicle, causing a van driven by Christopher R. Marrow, 51, to rear-end the flatbed of the tow truck, Illinois State Police Trooper Maria Navarro said. Marrow was flown to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge with chest trauma after a 90-minute extrication by Itasca firefighters.

"It was a heavy extrication that required assistance from additional companies," Radzinski said. "The driver was trapped in there pretty good."

The driver of another vehicle was taken by ambulance to Alexian Brothers Medical Center in Elk Grove Village with less serious injuries and was treated and released. Three other drivers and passengers involved in the accident refused treatment.

Outbound lanes were opened around 3:30 p.m., and three inbound lanes were open by about 3:45 p.m.
