Prospect Heights Dollars for Scholars awards scholarships
Prospect Heights Dollars for Scholars held its 2012 scholarship reception in July at Signature Flight Support Hangar 19, in Wheeling.
The two-hour catered gathering focused on the accomplishments and educational pursuits of this year's scholarship recipients. Due to successful fundraising, the board was able to increase the scholarship awards from $2,000 to $2,500 each for the 2012-13 academic year.
One-Year Academic Scholarships were awarded to the following 2012 high school graduates: Kelly Facer (Hersey), John Grischow (Hersey), Cory Hall (Hersey), Michail Razzakov (Wheeling), and Krista Sanford (Wheeling).
Lindsey Petersen, a 2011 graduate of John Hersey High School and current Bradley University student, was awarded a $2,500 one-year academic scholarship for a second year.
The $2,500 one-year Nick Teramani Vocational Scholarship was awarded to Billy Vu, a 2012 graduate of Wheeling High School.
Each year, Prospect Heights Dollars for Scholars also awards the Charles E. Priester Four-Year Academic Scholarship, named in honor of Charles E. Priester, one of the founders of the Prospect Heights Dollars for Scholars chapter. Syed Abid Khan, a 2012 graduate of Wheeling High School, is this year's recipient of that scholarship. Abid will receive a total of $10,000 toward his postsecondary education over the next four years. Previous recipients continuing to receive this award for their education are Jonathan Diores, Mackenzie Rivkin and Eddie Williams, Jr.
Through its scholarship program Prospect Heights Dollars for Scholars, a community-based nonprofit organization, raises money to help residents of Prospect Heights and Wheeling achieve their post-high school educational goals. Prospect Heights Dollars for Scholars is a chapter of Scholarship America®, the nation's largest private nonprofit scholarship organization.
Prospect Heights Dollars for Scholars holds two fundraisers annually to support its scholarship program. The spring fundraiser, raised over $30,000 for the fund. On Friday, Aug. 17, the annual golf outing was held at Old Orchard Country Club in Mount Prospect. Prospect Heights Dollars for Scholars again partnered with the Retired Professional Football Players of Chicago Dollars for Scholars to bring players a rare golf opportunity. Golfers had the opportunity to play a round of golf with a retired NFL football player and support Prospect Heights Dollars for Scholars too. The $175 registration fee included a round of golf, lunch and dinner, and golfing awards. A silent auction and raffles were also featured.
