Bears cut backup quarterback Matt Gutierrez
The Bears released quarterback Matt Gutierrez on Monday, less than two weeks after signing him as insurance after backup Caleb Hanie suffered a sprained shoulder in the first preseason game.
Gutierrez signed on Aug. 18, but did not play in either of the next two preseason games. He became expendable once the Bears agreed to terms with veteran quarterback Todd Collins on Aug. 23.
Gutierrez entered the league as an undrafted free agent with the New England Patriots in 2007 out of Idaho State. He appeared in five games for the Patriots his rookie year and completed his only pass attempt for 15 yards.
In 2008, he was on the Patriots' active roster for the final 16 weeks of the season, after starting out on the practice squad, but was inactive for 14 contests and did not play in the one game he was active.
After being acquired off waivers by the Kansas City Chiefs in 2009, Gutierrez appeared in one contest completing his only pass attempt for 3 yards. He was released by the Chiefs in June of 2010.
