Island Lake police officer on administrative leave
A part-time Island Lake police officer has been placed on administrative leave and is under investigation, Chief Anthony Sciarrone said today.
Mayor Debbie Herrmann confirmed Officer Fred Manetti has been taken off the street, but said he is not under investigation. The village's attorney is "just gathering information on procedure," she said.
Herrmann declined to elaborate.
Herrmann said she ordered Manetti put on leave. When asked if she has the power to supersede the chief's office, Herrmann said: "As the mayor, I have executive authority over the police department."
Manetti was put on leave "a couple weeks ago," Sciarrone said. It is not a criminal matter, he said.
Sciarrone would not say how long he expects the officer will be on leave. A hearing on the matter has not been scheduled, he said.
Herrmann expects the information-gathering process will take a week or two.
Island Lake has 13 full-time police officers and eight part-time officers, Sciarrone said.
