McHenry man sentenced to 22 years

A 30-year-old McHenry man was sentenced to 22 years in prison Friday for his role in an October 2010 home invasion and armed robbery.

Vincent E. Smith, of the 6900 block of Route 120, was also convicted of armed violence and aggravated unlawful restraint following a four-day a jury trial in February.

Smith and another man, both armed with knives and wearing masks, entered a house on the 800 block of Black Partridge Road in unincorporated McHenry County on Oct. 16.

The accomplice, Josh M. Crandall, 23, of 2500 block of Kosciuszko Road, held up a man at knifepoint and took $7,000 in $100 bills, before cutting the man’s throat and stabbing him in the chest, authorities said.

Another man was stabbed three times outside the house while Smith and Crandall were leaving. Both victims survived.

McHenry County sheriff’s deputies found 42 $100 bills in a DVD case upon search of a closet in Smith’s house.

Crandall was sentenced to 14 years in prison in March as part of a plea deal.

Both men have criminal records. Smith was sentenced to five years in prison in 2006 for burglary. Crandall was sentenced to three years in prison in 2007 after a parole violation and 2005 burglary, according to court records.
