Mozingo blasts 2 homers, but Boomers fall

O’FALLON, Mo. — The Schaumburg Boomers could not hold a 5-0 lead and fell 7-5 to the River City Rascals in the finale of a three-game series in suburban St. Louis on Thursday night.

The return of Chad Mozingo, who had missed eight days because of the lingering effects of a concussion, boosted the Boomers. Mozingo delivered an RBI single in the first and staked the Boomers (43-32) to a 4-0 lead with a 3-run homer in the third. Mozingo added a solo homer in the fifth.

The Rascals, who had scored 1 run in just over five games, erupted for 7 in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead. Doug Sanders tied the game with a double off the wall against starter and losing pitcher Matt Kuna (2-4), and Charlie Lisk hit the first Rascals homer of the series. Kuna pitched 4 innings.

The Boomers, who left the tying runs on base in both the sixth and eighth innings, travel to Traverse City for a three-game series against the Frontier League’s East Division leader. Left-hander Cameron Roth (8-5, 2.87) starts for the Boomers against right-hander Scott Dunn (4-3, 3.38).
