Quinn faces gambling legislation deadline today
The deadline is today for Gov. Pat Quinn to sign a gambling bill into a law that would add slot machines at Arlington Park and five new casinos in the state, including one in Lake County. Quinn has given few clues on his decision but said he thought about the legislation over the weekend and has concerns about its ethics. If Quinn doesn’t sign the legislation, he could veto the plan outright or he could rewrite it. Full story.
Judge dismisses Wheaton College’s suit against health care mandate
Citing a recently granted one-year exemption period for Wheaton College to comply with a federal health insurance mandate, a judge has dismissed a lawsuit filed by the college against the Obama administration. The suit questioned the legality of a health insurance mandate that would require the college to provide coverage including contraception, but the judge said it’s too early for the college to sue after the exemption. Ryder Cup ticket, the hottest in town
Although a few pricey ticket packages remain for the much-anticipated Ryder Cup, single-day tickets for the event at Medinah Country Club are going for about $275 on stubhub.com. Those who want to see Tiger Woods, Bubba Watson, Phil Mickelson and other stars compete in late September could opt for a limited number of practice round tickets for $35 a day. Full story.
Vehicle crashes through Schaumburg storefront, pinning receptionist
A receptionist at a Schaumburg hearing aid shop was lucky to escape unscathed after a driver crashed through the front of the store late Monday morning. “An elderly couple pulled up to the front of the office and floored it completely through the front of the building and into the reception desk,” said Schaumburg Fire Capt. Mark Harper. Officials said the driver thought he was hitting the brake. Full story.
Prosecutors: Man threw pet bird at wall, stabbed it to death
A 39-year-old Glendale Heights man is being held on charges that he threw his own pet cockatiel against a wall and stabbed it to death. Prosecutors said David Hritz punched his female roommate in the head before throwing his pet and stabbing it with a small pocket knife. “It looks like he just flipped out,” said police Sgt. Michael Jackson’s children visit Six Flags in Gurnee
Michael Jackson’s three children visited Six Flags Great America in Gurnee with new co-guardian T.J. Jackson and other friends and family yesterday. Last Wednesday, a judge appointed Michael Jackson’s nephew, T.J., to share responsibility for the children with Michael’s mother, Katherine. Full story.

Traffic
Construction continues at the corner of IL Route 31 and IL Route 176 were the roadway is being reconstructed. The construction will require intermittent closures for the start of the project but will eventually reduce lanes. The project will remain in place until November of 2013. Full report.
Cubs drop opener to Milwaukee 15-4
Aramis Ramirez hit two of Milwaukee’s five homers to lead the Brewers to a 15-4 victory over the Cubs on Monday night at Wrigley Field. Ramirez, who played for the Cubs from 2003-11, hit a two-run shot in the fifth and a solo homer in the ninth as Milwaukee beat Chicago for the sixth straight time. Full story.
Good news so far on Gavin Floyd
The White Sox’ Gavin Floyd had an MRI on Monday and no structural damage was found. Much like earlier in the season, when he was on the 15-day disabled list in July, Floyd apparently has tendinitis in the elbow. “Everything seems to be all right,” White Sox manager Robin Ventura told reporters in Baltimore before the Sox lost to the Orioles 4-3 last night. “He still has something in there that they’re checking on, but nothing that will put him out the rest of the year.” Full story.
