Vehicle crashes through Schaumburg store, pins receptionist

A receptionist at a Schaumburg hearing aid shop was lucky to escape unscathed after an elderly driver crashed through the front of the storefront late Monday morning.

The driver of the vehicle told fire department personnel he thought he was pressing the brake when he drove the vehicle through the glass storefront of Beltone Hearing Care Center on the 1000 block of Roselle Road, authorities said.

“An elderly couple pulled up to the front of the office and floored it completely through the front of the building and into the reception desk,” said Schaumburg Fire Capt. Mark Harper.

The vehicle pushed the desk, where a receptionist was sitting, into a wall about 11:30 a.m., Harper said. The woman was trapped between the desk and the wall but was uninjured.

“She was extremely shooken up,” Harper said. “We had to pull the reception desk from the wall to get her out.”

Neither the driver of the vehicle nor his passenger was injured.

Fire officials said the front of the building sustained major damage and needed to be shored up.

“The front of the building was completely taken out,” Harper said.
