Man airlifted from Wheaton crash, 2 others also hurt

One man was severely hurt and two other people suffered significant injuries in a Wednesday afternoon crash in Wheaton that tied up roadways for hours, officials said.

A Toyota Prius and a Dodge pickup truck collided head-on at the intersection of Roosevelt and Shaffner Roads at about 2:30 p.m., according to a fire department official.

The male driver of the Prius was pinned in the vehicle when fire department crews arrived and had suffered severe injuries in the crash, according to the Wheaton Fire Department commander at the scene.

The Prius driver — who was the only person in his vehicle — was taken to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove via medical helicopter, but his injuries do not appear to be life-threatening, officials said.

Two passengers in the pickup truck suffered “substantial” injuries and were both taken to Central DuPage Hospital. Their injuries also were not life-threatening, officials said.
