Mundelein Parks offers frosty fun

Embrace the chill, thrills and competition this winter at Mundelein Park District.

All ages are invited to join the free fun with sled races down Mundelein’s largest hill or the new “human curling” competition on the ice.

Activities take place at Keith Mione Community Park, 1401 N. Midlothian Road, on Saturday, Jan. 22, from 11 a.m. to noon, weather permitting.

This frosty fun calls for teams, but individuals are welcome to sign up. Saucers and sleds are provided. Register now for the activities at the Mundelein Community Center, located on Midlothian Road, between Route 176 and Winchester Road.

The sled races feature two heats, with one person per sled. Ties are broken with a “sled off.”

“Human curling” is just like the Winter Olympic sport, but instead of heavy stones sliding, it’s you!

Keith Mione Community Park is bustling with winter activities all season long. The sled hill is open daily 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., weather permitting (3 inches of snow required). As a reminder, only nonmetal sleds, tubes and saucers are permitted. Snowboards, skis and the constructing of jumps are not allowed. Rules are posted at the site.

Or, enjoy broomball on ice. This popular recreational game’s object is to score more goals than your opponent. Play is similar to sports such as ice or roller hockey. All ages are welcome to join in this self-guided activity on the rink from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. Skates are not required. Teams should stop by the Community Center at the same location to sign out equipment and get rules and details.

Open skate and hockey is also available at the lighted rink with dedicated times for activities. Times are available at mundeleinparks.org.

More fun awaits with sledding at Diamond Lake Sports Complex, located at routes 60 and 83. Access for sledding is at the north end of the parking area. A minimum of 3 inches of snow and a 7-inch thickness of pond ice is required. Signs are posted if the area is closed.

More skating is available at Mundelein’s Lions Field, at Noel Drive and Countryside Highway, with general open skate from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., weather permitting.

Weather updates for these winter activities can be found by calling the hotline at 847-566-0650, ext. 17.

Information on more activities to enjoy is also available at mundeleinparks.org.
