Child porn suspect to family: Let me stay in DuPage jail

A West Chicago man jailed on child pornography charges said during a court appearance Wednesday that he doesn't want his family to bail him out.

Jeff Evitt, 48, was in DuPage County bond court on four counts of aggravated child pornography after his home on the 29W200 block of National Street was seached by authorities.

After Judge Elizabeth Sexton set bail at $100,000, Evitt said he'd rather not have relatives spend the necessary $10,000 to get him out of jail.

“I don't want them spending their money to bond me out,” he told the judge.

Evitt is accused of possessing numerous pornographic images of mostly girls younger than 13. One of the images — allegedly involving both an animal and a child — was particularly aggravating, Assistant State's Attorney Kevin Laude said in court.

“In an interview, the defendant admitted he knew the files were there and that they were for his own sexual gratification,” Laude said.

Defense attorney Juan Ooink said Evitt has no prior criminal record and lives with his elderly parents, whom he helps care for.

Should he be released, Evitt is barred from using a computer and having contact with minors, Sexton said. His next court date is Aug. 2 before Judge George Bakalis.
