Where’s Obama plan for full employment?
I read with interest the letter, “Let’s hear GOP plan for full employment” in the June 16 Fence Post. It is a rather sweeping indictment and while I agree that poverty causes a number of social ills and is, to some degree, the result of a lack of jobs and inadequate wages, I would include among those causes addiction to drugs, alcohol, gambling, irresponsible fathering of multiple children by men who abandon them, women who continue to have children out of wedlock, adults and children who have little use for education and government social programs that reward such behavior.
The author blames “corporate greed” and “the greed of those who control the system and their minions who trash the common good of the vast majority of us.” What about the greed of public sector unions?
In Illinois, those who control of the system and their minions all happen to be Democrats. Are these the people who stifle the creation of public sector jobs? Are these the people being bought? Hiring more people in the public sector does nothing but increase taxpayer’s debt, which doesn’t seem to bother the 50 percent of wage earners who don’t pay federal income taxes.
As to the author’s assumption that Republicans want to privatize education, road and bridge building, water and sewage, fire and police, public transportation and the armed forces, I would ask the author to name one Republican politician who suggested this.
The author goes on to demand a specific plan for full employment from Romney. Romney hasn’t been president for the past three and a half years, Mr. Obama has. I have not read the author’s demand for such a plan from Mr. Obama during that time.
