Boomers close in on first place
The Schaumburg Boomers pulled within a game of the West Division lead Sunday with an extra-inning, pinch-hit, walk-off 6-5 victory over the first-place River City Rascals at Boomers Stadium.
Despite squandering a 5-2 lead, Schaumburg rallied with a run in the bottom of the 10th to improve to 13-8.
Chad Mozingo opened the inning with a double down the right-field line. Mozingo, who was 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored, moved to third on the sacrifice bunt by Ty Nelson, who also was 2-for-4. Nelson reached first base because the attempt to throw Mozingo out at third failed. The Rascals the walked Sean Mahley intentionally.
Jereme Milons, originally scheduled for a day off, came in to pinch hit. Milons hit the first pitch from River City reliever Dustin Umberger into center field to drive in Mozingo with the winning run.
Adam Tollefson earned the victory after pitching a scoreless 10th. Boomers starter Robby Donovan allowed 2 runs through 7 innings before running into some trouble in the eighth.
