Boomers suffer just 5th home loss

In the first meeting between the Frontier League’s two first-place teams, the Schaumburg Boomers suffered just their fifth home loss of the season and first at the hands of the Traverse City Beach Bums by a 5-3 score Saturday evening.

Early in the contest it looked as if both starting pitchers would not last more than a few innings after the Boomers (25-15) and Beach Bums (28-12) combined for 7 runs in the first two innings, with Traverse City holding a 4-3 lead.

Boomers pitcher Robbie Penny worked 3 scoreless innings after surrendering a pair of home runs in the first 2 innings. Penny (4-3, 5.00 ERA) took the loss following 5 innings where the righty struck out six and gave up 7 hits.

Brooks Belter earned his fifth win of the season for the Beach Bums and at one point retired 14 straight Boomers batters in the contest.

Three Boomers contributed at least 2 hits with Nate Baumann driving in 2 runs in the first and Chad Mozingo recording the other RBI. The defeat marked time the Boomers lost where they played error-free baseball at home.
