I-290 lanes reopened after truck fire

A truck fire shut down all three lanes of traffic on Interstate 290 late throughout Wednesday’s rush hour, causing extensive delays.

The semitrailer truck caught fire in the eastbound lanes of I-290 in Itasca just west of Mill Road at 3:41 p.m., according to Illinois State Police.

Police shut down three lanes due to smoke and the fire department’s response, but traffic was passing on the left shoulder. All lanes were reopened at 5:26 p.m.

Addison fire officials said some of the grass on the shoulder caught fire but was brought under control quickly.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
