Fire damages Addison strip mall

A fire on the roof of an Addison strip mall caused about $12,000 in damage Monday afternoon, according to fire officials.

Flames were visible from a distance and firefighters responding to the strip mall on the corner of Lake Street and Mill Road could see the fire as they pulled out of their station, Batallion Chief Roy Charvat said.

Firefighters arrived at the scene at about 1:30 p.m. and extinguished the blaze in about 10 to 15 minutes, officials said.

The fire was contained to an area of the roof above a vacant occupancy and never extended to the structure below, Charvat said.

An early investigation indicated the cause of the fire was electrical in origin, Charvat said.

An Addison firefighter suffered a minor injury during the response but was treated and released at the scene, officials said.

A restaurant next to the unit where the fire started was unable to open Monday because fire crews shut down electricity to the building, but was not damaged.
