A haunting at Spring Valley

A full moon provided the atmosphere and volunteer ghouls set the scary scene during last week's Haunting in the Valley at Spring Valley Nature Center.

Talking animals, swamp creature and costumed characters lined the trails to bring a spooky science and nature twist to celebrating Halloween.

“Haunting in the Valley is an alternative to the traditional haunted house,” said Derek Gronlund, education specialist at Spring Valley. “There's a green message in each vignette dealing with the importance of decay, the reuse of nutrients and the life that comes from this process.”

The sold-out Haunting also provided a message about the importance of recycling.

“It's a great educational event for the kids,” said Norma Rathers, a Schaumburg mother of two 7-year old twins.

The fun also included a wagon ride, campfire, live owl display, autumnal treats and games in the Spring Valley Nature Center.
