Mount Prospect vehicle stickers on sale now

Submitted by village of Mount Prospect

Village Hall open select Saturday hours — new this year — residents can now purchase on line

Village of Mount Prospect vehicle stickers for 2012-2013 are on sale now. The new vehicle sticker must be displayed by May 1. Passenger vehicle stickers are $36, motorcycle and motorbike stickers are $24, and trucks with B plates are $54. There is an additional price schedule for trucks based on their individual weights. There is no increase in fees this year.

If residents bought one or more stickers last year, they should have received a renewal application in early February. If they received a renewal application, they will be able to conveniently purchase the new stickers by mail. If they did not receive an application, one can be obtained at village hall. If residents had a vehicle sticker in 2011 and did not receive a renewal application in the mail, this does not absolve them of the responsibility for buying a new sticker. If the vehicle(s) they have now is/are not the same as the one they had when last year’s sticker was purchased, the application form will contain information about the former vehicle. In that case, just cross out those details and print the current information on the application.

To purchase new sticker(s) in person instead of by mail or online, residents can do so at the village hall during regular business hours, between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. For residents’ convenience, the village hall will be open from 9 a.m. to noon the following Saturdays in April: April 21 and 28. Beginning May 1, escalating late purchase penalties will be added to the cost of the sticker.

If residents receive a police department citation for not having an up-to-date sticker, they may have to pay a fine; pay the basic cost of the new sticker and pay the late purchase penalty. All of this can be avoided by buying the sticker on time.

New for the 2012-2013 sticker season is the ability to purchase vehicles sticker online. The web address to log in to use this free service is www.mountprospect.org/vehiclestickers. There is a vehicle ID referenced on the pre-printed application residents may have received in the mail that will get the renewal process started. Residents may still be able to purchase the sticker online without a pre-printed application. Visit the website for more information.

The penalty will not initially apply to new village residents or to residents who purchase replacement vehicles on or after May 1. In either case, residents will have 30 days in which to purchase the sticker. During the grace period, proof of purchase or move-in date will be required to assure that a surcharge penalty is not imposed. If residents change vehicles during the year after having bought a current sticker, a replacement sticker may be obtained within 30 days (with original receipt) in order to qualify for the $5 transfer fee. If purchasing new license plates, residents should purchase the sticker within the 30-day limit and write “applied for” in the space on the application for license plate information. When the plates are received, call the Finance Department and provide the plate numbers. Senior citizen rates are available for residents 65 and over (with proof of age). However, just one reduced rate ($12) sticker per household is allowed and the vehicle must be owned and operated by the senior for a noncommercial purpose. Seniors who become eligible to purchase a vehicle sticker at the reduced rate must come in to village hall to obtain that sticker. Certain individuals with disabilities may be eligible to receive a sticker at no charge. Contact the Finance Department for information.
