Trujillo, Fenton shut down Timothy
Thursday afternoon’s weather conditions at the Timothy Christian baseball field in Elmhurst simply were not conducive for any show of offense.
A cold wind blew in from the northeast, making trying to stay warm the top activity of both fans, coaches and players alike.
The Fenton batting order, however, found a way to stay warm, even to get a little hot. The Bison belted out nine hits and got a complete game from starting pitcher Rigo Trujillo to win 9-1 and take the Metro Suburban Conference series 2-1.
“Our offense has been hit and miss. But when we’re on, we’re on,” said Fenton coach Dave Schwabe. “We knew we needed the game to win the series. The players were concentrating. They came in business-like. The kids did a great job.”
The Bison (6-5, 2-1) steadily took control of the game with runs in the first four innings. Fenton scored three runs in the first with the help of a Trojan fielding error and a sacrifice fly by Trujillo.
Another fielding error in the second helped Fenton take a 4-1 advantage. Timothy Christian (4-5, 1-2) got on the scoreboard in its half of the first. Leadoff hitter Luke Davidson doubled to left center and was brought home on Sam Meyer’s two-out single to center.
Augie Castellanos’ two-run double to right in the third, and Jax Castellanos’ two-run single the following inning helped break the game open for Fenton.
Trujillo allowed just four hits and struck out three.
“Rigo got stronger as the game went on,” Schwabe said.
Trujillo said the cold and wind couldn’t be ignored.
“The weather was a bit of a challenge. It took me a couple of innings to warm up,” he said. “The offense was great. I couldn’t have done it without them.”
Colin Wallace finished with three hits for Fenton. Alex Lake had the Bison’s other extra-base hit, a double in the third.
“All-around not a great day for us,” Timothy coach coach Jim Snoeyink said. “But you are going to have days like this. I told them to put it behind them and we’ll go back to work Monday.”
The team’s next game is Tuesday at home against MSC foe Elmwood Park.
The Bison resume play Saturday with a 10 a.m. nonconference home doubleheader against Vernon Hills at Redmond Park in Bensenville.
