Article missed value of teacher assistants
Mick Zawislak’s article “Hawthorn school district eliminates 31 assistant jobs” dated March 17, greatly diminishes the role that the teacher assistants perform.
They collaborate with teachers in the modification of assignments and tests. The assistants reteach academic lessons to those children who need a lesson taught at a slower pace, give tools and strategies to help children be successful, read with them and ask questions to check comprehension, read tests to students who require extra help or time.
Assistants also work with students in small groups and give any and all support to the teachers and students to aide in the teaching/learning process. By not giving a full description of this role, this article gives little weight of the assistants’ importance and value to the students and teachers of District 73.
