Libertyville has to play waiting game
Lake Forest set a high mark for the season, taking the top spot and posting a 146.4 on Tuesday night in the regional hosted by the Scouts.
Libertyville sits on the bubble with advancement to the sectional after scoring 138.725.
Lake Forest's Kylie Carlson, a freshman, won the all-around (37.975) and all four events.
Libertyville's Leah Herchenbach advanced in three events and the all-around for next week's Stevenson sectional.
The Scouts beat their previous high score set at their own invitational early last month. Lake Forest has its best team since the 1984-85 season; it had been 10 years since they last hosted a regional.
"We still can do more, if we can hit bars and vault," Lake Forest coach Robin Straus said. "We can get our score higher.
"The team back then was a special team. This group is closer and has fun together. Maybe this group has a touch more depth. They're all together at the same place."
Carlson set a school record on floor with her personal-best routine registering a top score of 9.75.
"I did it and realized all the work paid off," said Carlson, who also took first on beam (9.575), vault (9.425), and bars (9.225). "I never thought about the score. Just going out there and doing my best for the team."
The Scouts also got all-around honors from Olfelia Carmichael (second at 36.25) and Ashley Smith (fourth at 35.925). Carmichael placed second on floor (9.2), third on vault (9.325) and fifth on bars (8.85), Smith took third on floor (9.05), fifth on vault (8.975) and fifth on beam (9.125). Grace Kohlmaier placed fourth on vault (9.125) and fourth on floor (8.925).
Herchenbach finished fifth in the all-around (38.9), but had her best event on beam with a second place of (9.375). Also, Herchenbach placed second on bars (8.975) and fifth on floor (8.8).
"Beam was my best by far, because I've only hit the routine once all season," Herchenbach said. "I've been working on it pretty hard all week. The series is always the tough spot to hit and I did it."
Libertyville's Jenna Dunsing, a freshman, will have to wait and see if she made it to sectional with an at-large berth after finishing sixth on vault (8.8). Her teammate Lindsay Schweitzer placed seventh on beam (9).
"I'd love to make it at large, I would have loved to make it top five," Dunsing said. "But, I know it's not going to happen. I still believe it was an accomplishment."
Libertyville as a team has to wait two more regionals - at Stevenson on Thursday and at Carmel on Friday - before they'll know if they've made the sectional.
"Being a young team, we do have a lot of potential," Libertyville coach John Taylor said. "I thought they brought things together for a good meet. You never know what's going to happen over the next two regionals. We just have to wait and see what happens. If we earned it, then we deserve to be there."
