Streamwood comic artist nominated for second award

“Tiny Titans,” the colorful comic book written and drawn by Streamwood's Art Baltazar, received its second Eisner Award nomination earlier this month, the comic industry's equivalent of an Oscar nod.

The book, nominated in the best publication for kids category, features pint-size versions of famous DC Comics heroes like Wonder Woman, Robin and the Flash.

Baltazar and his collaborator, Franco Aurleliani, won the same award in 2009.

Baltazar said it was surprise this time around, adding that he faces a lot of stiff competition.

“I'm not as confident this year,” he said from his Streamwood home which doubles as his studio.

Baltazar keeps his 2009 trophy in a cabinet in his dining room where, he said, there's room for more trophies.

The Eisner Awards are named for Will Eisner, a famous cartoonist known for characters including “The Spirit.” He died in 2005, and before that was a regular participant in the ceremonies which began in 1988. It's the highest honor for a comic book.

The 2011 winners will be announced on July 22 at the San Diego Comic-Con International.
