Fewell could accept Bears defensive coordinator job today

Perry Fewell is expected to be offered the job Monday when he interviews for the Bears' vacant defensive coordinator position. And, according to at least one Internet report, Fewell has already decided to accept the job.

The 47-year-old Fewell was the Buffalo Bills' interim head coach for the final seven games this season after Dick Jauron was fired with a 3-6 record. Under Fewell, the Bills went 3-4 to finish 6-10. He has already interviewed for the full-time head-coaching position in Buffalo but is considered a long shot.

Fewell was the Bears' defensive backs coach in 2005 under head coach Lovie Smith before leaving to become the Bills' defensive coordinator. He was also the defensive backs coach for the St. Louis Rams in 2003, when Smith was their defensive coordinator.

The Bears are also expected to interview USC quarterbacks coach Jeremy Bates this week, although it's uncertain whether they consider him a candidate for offensive coordinator or quarterbacks coach.

Another person of interest for the offensive coordinator's job is Packers quarterbacks coach Tom Clements, who gets high marks for his work developing Aaron Rodgers.

Clements does not call the Packers' offensive plays. That job belongs to head coach Mike McCarthy. But Clements, 56, an all-America quarterback at Notre Dame and a member of the Canadian Football League's Hall of Fame, coordinated the Bills' offense in 2004 and '05 before joining the Packers. He has 11 years' experience as a quarterbacks coach in the NFL, and he practiced law for five years before beginning his coaching career at Notre Dame.
