DuPage series aimed at preventing, managing diabetes
The University of Illinois Extension will offer “I on Diabetes,” a series of four 3-hour sessions designed for anyone interested in preventing or managing diabetes. This program provides information on treatment goals and self-monitoring, managing carbohydrates, sodium and cholesterol.
Additionally, meal planning, reading food labels, using artificial sweeteners and low-fat products, seasoning with herbs and spices are excellent tools for self-management. In each session, participants receive recipes, watch cooking demonstrations, and taste foods to meet their special needs.
The goal of “I on Diabetes” is to improve diabetic care and overall well-being. The program is meant to complement the recommendations of your health care provider and to help you and/or your loved ones manage diabetes.
Extension Nutrition and Wellness Educator Laura Barr will help participants increase their knowledge of healthy food choices using research-based resources.
Health education is needed to understand the food relationship to blood sugar or serum glucose after being diagnosed with diabetes. They will present relevant topics and cooking demonstrations. Plus, provide recipes and food tasting at each class.
The programs will be presented from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Fridays, April 27 to May 18, in the conference room at the DuPage County Unit, 1100 E. Warrenville Road, Suite 170 in Naperville.
The cost is $40 for the whole series. Preregistration and payment for the series are due by Friday, April 20.
