Second mayor in LITH was committed to service

LeRoy Guy, the second village president of Lake in the Hills, had an ambitious streak and was always dedicated to serving the community, those who knew him say.

Guy, who served as village president from 1959 to 1969, died at his home in Marengo Friday. He was 83.

“He always felt that involvement of the people was the way to go in government,” Guy’s stepdaughter, Kay Kovacs, said. “So, he got involved. He volunteered a lot in the community and felt it was his responsibility to be an active part of the community.”

During his tenure as village president, Guy oversaw the creation of the village’s sanitary district, which moved the village from septic tanks to a sewer system. The village’s gravel streets were also paved under his presidency.

“He was always very ambitious, always trying to better himself,” a one-time neighbor, Mary McLaughlin said. “He started the sanitary district. Our yard used to be dug up very few years for the septic tanks, so that was quite an accomplishment and very much appreciated.”

After serving as village president, Guy was appointed to the role of village treasurer and later selected by the board to serve as trustee. Guy was a village trustee from 1970 to 1978. He was also the Sanitary District president for 12 years.

In addition to his service in Lake in the Hills, Guy was village president in Twin Lakes, Wis., for two terms during the 1980s, Kovacs said. There, a fire station was named in his honor.

Lake in the Hills honored Guy with the LeRoy Guy Park at 201 S. Lakewood Drive.

Funeral services are private and for the family only, according to Guy’s obituary.
