Wheeling step team wins ‘three-peat’

Wheeling High School’s step team, the Crucial Step Clique, once again won the Illinois Drill Team Association’s State Championship.

The team competed in the state tournament at the University of Illinois March 17, winning top honors in the step competition for three consecutive years.

At the regional competitions, senior Kenia Valencia and freshman Rocio Gutierrez were named “rising stars.”

In addition to competing in IDTA tournaments, Crucial Step Clique won numerous competitions and step shows throughout the Chicago area and perform at Wheeling events.

Under the guidance of coach Joyce Brewer, team members are the following Wheeling High School students, in addition to Valencia and Gutierrez: Ana Karen Hernandez, Ashley Sicard, Ashley Zawacki, Berenice Diaz, Brenda Carlos, Candace Plummer, Diana Reyes, Iris Torres, Jenny Hernandez, Jesenia Bahena, Jessica Arellano, Jocelyn Rodriguez, Maribel Aguilar, Mayoly Ocampo, Naya Clemons, Nia Evans, Yasmin Salazar and Yendi Delfin.
