A local group is traveling to Nicaragua with Living Water International. Volunteers will be part of well-drilling team bringing clean water to those in need.

Six local community members from The Chapel in Barrington Hills will be traveling to Nicaragua this month with Living Water International. They will be part of a well-drilling team that will bring clean water to communities in Nicaragua. The group will have the opportunity to see the water crisis first hand as well as help teach water hygiene studies to the villagers.

Team leader Joe Witkins from Cary and five additional members from The Chapel will join Living Water for this mission trip. Witkins has worked in the church for more than 30 years as a high school youth minister and leader. He also has traveled to 19 countries and attended Living Water’s mission trip to El Salvador this past October.

“I am looking forward to once again seeing the smiling faces of those waiting for the gift of fresh water. It is rewarding to help provide clean water to these communities who need it most,” Witkins said.

Today, about 884 million people face the daily challenge of finding water. This resource is tremendously scarce in Nicaragua, where more than 20 percent of Nicaraguans lack access to a source of clean, safe water, and more than half do not have access to adequate sanitation services.
