U-46 superintendent to speak to Elgin Lions Club April 3
The Elgin Lions Club will hold its regular meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 3 at the Holiday Inn, 495 Airport Road, Elgin. The speaker will be Dr. Jose Torres, superintendent of Elgin Area School District U-46. Dr. Torres is entering his fifth year as superintendent of the state's second largest school district. His talk will focus on a district program titled "Destination 2015." Anyone interested in the future of U-46 is invited to attend.
Those interested in attending the meeting to hear Dr. Torres speak should contact Lion President Ed Bates at batesed@cod.edu, or leave a message indicating your planned attendance at (847) 289-4206. The meeting of the club includes a meal to which the public is invited. There will be a charge of $15 for the meal. Advance notification of attendance is necessary to provide adequate seating and meals.
In other club news, the Elgin Lions Club is conducting its annual Rose Day. A dozen beautiful roses are being sold for $15. Deliveries will be made on April 4-6.
People can take advantage of this sale that pays for a great number of eyeglasses for U-46 school children by contacting any Elgin Lions Club member or by calling (847) 289-4206 and leaving a message or by emailing Ed Bates at batesed@cod.edu. A club member will return the call to obtain delivery information and to arrange for payment. Orders must be placed by Friday, March 30.
The nonperishable food collection program of the Elgin Lions is winding down, but there are plans to continue as long as the need exists and there are generous donors. Approximately 1,500 pieces of food have been collected and delivered to the Community Crisis Center in Elgin and the Salvation Army.
