Don’t endorse Roskam in the fall
While I like all three Democratic candidates for the 6th Congressional District, I support your editorial endorsement of Leslie Coolidge in the March 20 primary election. Each are uniquely qualified to represent the 6th District in Washington, but Leslie has the best chance of unseating the incumbent, Peter Roskam, in the general election.
You wrote of Ms. Coolidge, ”she pledged to take positions based on facts and the district’s needs, not on political orthodoxy. That we strongly support.”
When it comes time to make your endorsements in the fall, I would like you to review what you wrote this week, especially this sentence about Democratic candidate Maureen Yates. “Yates is a feisty liberal who would cast a party-line vote every time, saying she would often ask party veterans how to vote.”
Peter Roskam votes with his party 95 percent of the time. This is actual information from the House database, not hyperbole. From 2007-2010, he voted “no” on bills brought up by the Democratic majority. From 2011-present, he has voted “yes” on bills brought up by his party.
Since you think the U.S. Representative from the Illinois 6th District should respond to constituents’ needs, not party dictates, you should not endorse Peter Roskam in November.
