First win for Wheeling

Wheeling’s softball team got its first win of the season on Thursday as Katie Quagliano fired a 4-hitter with 7 strikeouts and no walks in a 6-1 triumph at Dundee-Crown.

The sophomore right-hander (1-1) did not give up an earned run.

The Wildcats (1-1) scored 4 runs in the fourth inning and two more in the fifth on a two-out, 2-run single with the bases loaded by junior Kaitlyn DeBusk.

Other top hitters for the Wildcats were junior Sara Kern (3-for-3, triple), junior Ashley Hafertepe (2-for-4, double, 2 RBI) and senior Amanda Zammatta (2-for-4, 2 RBI).

Freshman Nikki Mickosz had her first varsity hit for the Wildcats, who also received singles from senior Randi Shapiro and junior Jackie Resnik.

“It was a solid game for us,” said Wheeling coach Mike Caringella, whose team travels to Niles West on Monday at 4:30 p.m.

Girls soccer

Buffalo Grove 4, Batavia 2:

Colleen and Kelli Zickert both scored a pair of goals to kick host Buffalo Grove past Batavia in nonconference girls soccer action. Kelli Zickert added an assist, and Carolynn Wieland notched a pair of assists for the Bison. Katie Okamoto was the winner goalkeeper.
