Pedestrian struck by train killed in Vernon Hills

A pedestrian was killed early this morning when struck by a train in Vernon Hills, just south of Route 60, police said.

Vernon Hills Deputy Police Chief Bill Price said the department received a call at 5:55 a.m. this morning after the Metra train hit the female pedestrian on the tracks about a half block south of Route 60.

The collision took place between the Mundelein and Vernon Hills train stations, he said.

Metra officials said train 100 on the North Central Service line was involved, and it was detained at the Vernon Hills station by police during the investigation.

Officials said trains on the North Central Service line are still delayed 20 to 25 minutes into the city despite the investigation working into its fourth hour.

Route 60 in Vernon Hills near Butterfield Road was shut down for about four hours due to the investigation, but reopened at about 11:30 a.m., authorities said.

Price said the investigation has been handed over to Metra Police, and that it is unclear at this time how long the investigation will take.

It also remains unclear when service on the North Central Line will return to normal.

Price said the person killed has not yet been identified.
