Whose pursuit of happiness matters?
While I was on vacation in ‘04, a friend thought it’d be cute to fill my lawn with John Kerry signs and put me on every left wing mailing list he could think of. The signs made good target practice and I stayed on the mailing lists for the heck of it.
Every now and again I get a chuckle from these things, including when the MoveOn crowd sent an email to tell me why I should pay for their contraception. I wonder if they got the irony here?
OK, that aside, let me share a little insight with all of you Washington-knows-best types out there. You want birth control, go ahead and buy it yourself. I’m not in your way, and while my church has something to say about the subject, they aren’t stopping you, either.
Now if you want to want to tell me I should pay for your abortions too, well, that’s a very different matter even if it does begin with the same physical act. I’d like to borrow a phrase from Father Sularz at St. Daniel’s Church in Wheaton: “The Declaration of Independence says we are entitled to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, in that order.”
If that doesn’t make sense to you, Father Sularz also said, “The child’s life is more important than the mother’s pursuit of happiness.”
It’s a simple message, and it’s right.
