Persistent Barrington outlasts Providence

Although Barrington trailed 15-11 at intermission of its Sweet 16 tournament game on Monday night, the Fillies knew the game was still within their grasp.

“We shot 4-of-22 in the first half, so I was proud of kids that they didn’t get discouraged,” said Barrington coach Babbi Barreiro. “We took some good shots and they just weren’t falling, so we felt good about being down only 4 at half .”

The Fillies felt even better 16 minutes later when they wrapped up a 36-32 victory over visiting Providence Catholic to improve to 2-0 in the Sweet 16.

Senior forward K.D. Madden (8 points, 8 rebounds), senior Nicole Collins (8 points, 4 rebounds, 4 steals), sophomore Angie Kirchoff (7 points) and junior Maddie Bartz (6 points) led a balanced offense.

“It was really a good defensive game for us,” Barreiro added. “They (Providence) are very athletic and we did a nice job defending them.”

Madden scored all 8 of her points in the second half and the Fillies made 9-of-10 free throws in the fourth quarter.

“They put us on the line a lot and the kids converted,” Barreiro said. “And we rebounded pretty well.”

The Fillies (11-12) return to their home floor today at 7:30 p.m. to face Hoffman Estates.

Fenwick 73, Buffalo Grove 48: Meredith Boardman scored a game-high 17 points with 6 rebounds and 4 blocks for Fenwick in the Sweet 16 tournament game.

Jade Owens had 13 points, 6 assists and 3 steals, and Maggie Reilly added 13 points for the Friars (17-5).

Junior center Bailey North led the Bison (4-17) with 14 points while freshman Julie Jambrone chipped in 7 and senior Emily Cho 6.

The Bison return to action on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. when they host Prospect in the Mid-Suburban East.
