Apartment fire does $2 million in damage

A chimney fire Friday night caused the evacuation of about seven families and possibly up to $2 million in damage to an apartment building in Arlington Heights, fire officials said. The Arlington Heights Fire Department responded to a call just after 11 p.m. to The Pointe Apartments on Woods Drive, said Cmdr. Bill Essling. Full story.

Crystal Lake Marine pilot killed in Afghanistan

A native of Crystal Lake was among six Hawaii-based Marines killed when their helicopter crashed Thursday in Afghanistan, military officials said. Capt. Nathan McHone, 29, a 2001 graduate of Crystal Lake South High School, was sent in August with the squadron on a seven-month deployment to Afghanistan, said base spokeswoman 1st Lt. Diann Olson.

Elk Grove man shot in chase gets 7-year sentence

A 24-year-old Elk Grove Village man was sentenced to seven years in prison Friday after leading Chicago police on a high-speed chase on the Jane Addams Tollway that ended when he was shot in the chest at the Elgin toll plaza. Full story.

Volo man dies in snowmobile crash in forest preserve

Lake County Coroner Artis Yancey said Sunday that preliminary findings suggest that neither drugs nor alcohol played a role in the snowmobile crash Friday night in Wauconda that killed a 39-year-old Volo man. Yancey added that the cause of Shane Diaz's death is likely to be blunt trauma sustained in the crash, though no formal determination has yet been made.

Second prostitution charge at South Elgin spa

Police arrested 65-year-old Son Jang, of Arlington Heights, on prostitution charges Friday, less than a year after arresting a Bolingbrook woman on similar charges in the same location, according to Sgt. Mike Doty. The massage parlor at 1314 W. Spring St., was called Heaven Spa when 44-year-old Naomi Suh was arrested last March and charged with solicitation of prostitution and keeping a place of prostitution, among other charges.

Officers receiving Gurnee Purple Hearts

Five Gurnee police officers injured in the line of duty will receive Gurnee Purple Heart Awards during a ceremony Monday, officials said. Cmdr. Jay Patrick said the five officers being honored at 7:30 p.m. at the Gurnee Village Hall, 325 O'Plaine Road, have endured serious injury while apprehending criminals who were resisting arrest. Klinkhamer running “anti-campaign” for Kane Co. chairmanship

Sue Klinkhamer has a chance at becoming the first Democrat to sit in the Kane County Board chairman's seat in more than a century. And while that might motivate some people to spend all day knocking on doors, making calls to collect campaign contributions and plunging signs into their neighbors' front yards, Klinkhamer won't be doing any of that.

Large field competing in Lake Co. State's Attorney race

Most people who will vote in the 2012 election to pick Lake County's next state's attorney weren't old enough to cast a ballot the last time the contest was held under similar circumstances. An incumbent state's attorney is not on the ballot for the first time since 1968.
