Investigation continues in crash that killed Volo man

Lake County Coroner Artis Yancey said Sunday that preliminary findings suggest that neither drugs nor alcohol played a role in the snowmobile crash Friday night in Wauconda that killed a 39-year-old Volo man.

Yancey added that the cause of Shane Diaz’s death is likely to be blunt trauma sustained in the crash, though no formal determination has yet been made.

The crash occurred shortly before 10 p.m. on Friday. Authorities say the snowmobile Diaz was driving struck a cable gate at the Lakewood Forest Preserve. Wauconda emergency personnel responded but could not save Diaz, who was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, authorities said.

The Lake County Forest Preserve Ranger Police and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources Police were investigating the accident. No new information was available Sunday.
