Losing title unlikely for Maine South
Maine South's football program was hit Monday with the possibility of IHSA sanctions just two days after it received its third straight Class 8A state football championship trophy.
But IHSA executive director Marty Hickman said returning the title trophy would be “unlikely” as they deal with questions about the use of fake sideline passes and sportsmanship conduct during the state playoffs.
“There are a variety of sanctions that could be imposed in this situation, including suspensions or the loss of postseason hosting opportunities,” Hickman said in a news release Monday afternoon, “but based on what we know at this juncture, it is unlikely that any of those sanctions would include Maine South forfeiting its state championship.”
The IHSA has requested a Dec. 13 meeting with members of the Maine South administration and football coaching staff.
According to a statement released Monday by the IHSA, the issues center on the creation and distribution of counterfeit sideline passes, the presence of alumni on the sidelines, and incidents at the state finals with security/local police over the removal of some individuals in possession of the fake passes.
The IHSA also expressed concerns over the conduct of the school's student body in the Hawks 29-22 semifinal victory at Loyola.
“It is unfortunate to have what should be a time of celebration marred by the unethical actions of individuals associated with the school's football program,” Hickman said. “As we told members of the Maine South administration on a conference call this morning, we take these abuses very seriously.
“Not only do these actions present significant safety issues, but some could potentially provide a competitive advantage, which may warrant sanctions. We have asked them to conduct an internal investigation prior to the December Board meeting.”
Maine South will be asked at the meeting to disclose the results of its investigation and a plan to prevent future transgressions.
A phone message left Monday afternoon for Maine South athletic director Steve Adams was not returned. Maine Township High School District 207 and Maine South did issue a statement late Monday afternoon.
“Maine South High School and Maine Township High School District 207 will comply with the IHSA request to conduct an internal investigation regarding the issues outlined by the IHSA in its communications on Monday,” the news release said. “Maine South and District 207 take seriously the concerns presented by the IHSA and will conduct a thorough investigation. Maine South will present its findings as requested in advance of the Dec. 13 Board meeting of the IHSA.”
