Cutler, Martz agree comment was no big deal

Surprisingly, Jay Cutler addressed the profane comment he uttered Sunday night toward offensive coordinator Mike Martz.

The second surprise was that Cutler had some killer material.

The Bears' quarterback was caught on camera and microphone shouting to the sideline, telling quarterbacks coach Shane Day to relay a message to Martz in the Soldier Field coaches' booth.

“Tell him I said (bleep) him,” Cutler was heard to say during the game against Minnesota.

Asked about the exchange Wednesday, Cutler likened it to a loud, heated, verbal altercation between two media members last week that spilled into a hallway at Halas Hall.

“Things happen,” Cutler said. “You guys were fighting in the hallway last week.”

After the laughter died down, Cutler continued.

“You know, I'm not going to make a big deal if it's not a big deal. We're all on the same team in this building. We're going to try to win football games.”

Martz claimed not to be aware of the sound bite that already has made its way to YouTube. But when informed of it, he laughed it off.

“That's probably the nicest thing that a player said to me during the game,” Martz said. “You've got to understand that during the course of a game a lot of things get said. It's a very competitive environment.

“That's not an issue, really. It's just part of the deal. During games a lot of things get said, trust me, by everybody. So that's not an issue.”

Cutler said he didn't have any complaints with the omnipresent cameras that are part of NFL game coverage.

“They have cameras everywhere now,” he said. “That's the media, and that's how it is these days. They're going to try to create stories, and they're going to try to find anything to make something out of nothing. It is what it is, and that camera is going to be there.”

Cutler also said he did not regret the message he sent to Martz, even though the Bears already were up 23-3 late in the first half.

“I'm a competitor; so is he, so is everyone on this offense,” Cutler said, “and whether we're up 3 touchdowns or we're up 3 points, a second- or third-down call is as important as anywhere in the game.”

Cutler and Martz both seemed satisfied to put the episode in the past.

“We're good,” Cutler said. “We're moving on. (We're) excited about this week's game plan, excited to go play in London.”
