Stein, Timothy Christian run away from Fenton
The last time Timothy Christian and Fenton faced each other, the game came down to a last-second shot.
Friday night Timothy Christian started the game on a 16-4 run as Rob Stein scored the Trojans' first 11 points. The Trojans cruised to a 78-45 Metro Suburban Conference victory in Elmhurst.
"With this game being homecoming, our crowd was behind us," Stein said. "I love playing at home, and for some reason my shots were just falling."
After Fenton (8-14, 36) scored the opening basket Stein hit a three-point play, then followed with a jumper and back-to-back 3-pointers. It was ultimately the Trojans' fast start that did Fenton in, said Bison coach Dennis Cromer.
"This was the last thing I expected tonight," Cromer said. "The first time it came down to the last shot, and I figured this game would be 10 points or closer either way. They just came out and pounded us early and we just could never respond from that."
It wasn't just the offense that Timothy Christian (18-6, 6-3) was excelling at. In the second half it held Fenton to 21 points. It also prevented the Bison from getting into the flow of their offense by picking up their ballhandlers beyond midcourt and forcing them to pick up their dribble. The Trojans forced 18 turnovers for the game.
"Our defensive intensity was very good tonight," Trojans coach Jack LeGrand said. "From our perimeter to our post, we challenged every shot and pass. That is the one point of emphasis we've had this season is our defense."
Stein finished with a game-high 18 points and 7 rebounds. He shot 7 of 9 from the floor.
Vince Esposito led Fenton with 10 points.
