Palatine man shoots himself as Schaumburg police try to talk him out of suicide

Schaumburg police arrived in the parking lot of Tilted Kilt Pub & Eatery Sunday hoping to persuade a Palatine man to put down the guns he had and choose not to commit suicide.

The 28-year-old could not be persuaded, and shot himself in the head at about 10:45 p.m. outside of the pub, 1140 E. Higgins Road, according to police.

Sgt. John Nebl said the man was at the Tilted Kilt with a group of friends when he announced to them he was going to commit suicide and walked outside.

Nebl said when police arrived they approached the man with caution.

“There were vehicles in the parking lot where officers could maintain cover and protect themselves,” Nebl said.

The three objectives of officers in these situations are to help the individual, keep the public safe and keep themselves safe, Nebl said.

The bar was still open when the man fired his gun and people were inside the establishment. But, although police could not save the man, no one else was injured.

Nebl said the man's friends gave no indication he was intoxicated before leaving the bar.

An autopsy on the man's body is scheduled for Monday.

Schaumburg police will continue their investigation to find out more about the man leading up to his death, Nebl said, but he called this case fairly cut and dry.

The Daily Herald does not identify the names of suicide victims.
