Special week at Avon Center School:Avon Center School in Round Lake Beach is hosting an inaugural "Bring Your Parent to School Week" through Friday. Parents are encouraged to visit their children's classrooms for 15 to 30 minutes this week so they can see firsthand what their students are doing at the building that's part of Grayslake Elementary District 46. Officials said they want to boost parent involvement beyond conferences with teachers. Twelve parents visited classrooms when the event kicked off Monday. Children in kindergarten through fourth grade attend Avon Center.Mystery at VHHS:The Vernon Hills High School Backlight Theatre Production Co. is proud to present its spring play, "Agatha Christie's The Mousetrap," this month. Performances are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. May 6-8. Tickets are $5 for adults and $4 for students and children. They will be for sale at the door. The school is located at 145 Lakeview Parkway in Vernon Hills.Volunteers sought for health screening event:The Lake County Health Department is looking for volunteers to assist at "How Fit is your Family?," a community health screening event from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 22, at Oak Terrace School, 240 Prairie Avenue in Highwood. All volunteers are welcome, especially medical professionals, dietitians and interpreters bilingual in English and Spanish. Volunteers are also needed as greeters, to register participants and assist with family activities. The event will feature physical activities for families, and several free health screenings, including blood pressure and blood sugar (non-fasting); dental; foot assessments; and pre-diabetes risk assessment.
