Cahill, Amann lead Jacobs to sectional berth

Jacobs seniors Scott Cahill and Buzz Amann thought they could be a part of a sectional qualifying boys golf team.

“We knew Fremd and Barrington are two good schools, Cahill said at Tuesday's Class 3A Buffalo Grove regional. “We knew if we played well and got a couple of other good scores, we'd have a chance.

And the Golden Eagles will get the chance to keep playing as a team at Monday's St. Viator sectional at Old Orchard Country Club. Cahill shot an even-par 72 and Amann shot 74 as the Golden Eagles shot 309 to earn the third and final qualifying spot at Buffalo Grove Golf Course.

Fremd also shot 309 but finished second on a fifth-score tiebreaker and Barrington won its 15th regional title with a 296.

Sophomore Cameron Bodie, who played on the Jacobs junior varsity most of the year, shot an even-par 36 on the front and finished with 81. Sean Kozak shot 82 and Devin Sloma and Erik Anderson shot 84s.

“We definitely thought we'd have a chance if everybody played well, Amann said after tying Barrington's Greg Conrad for sixth place, “and everyone played well. Shooting 309 as a team is a great score.

Amann's previous 18-hole best was 79. He got off to a rough start Tuesday as he bogeyed the first four holes but recovered to get 2 birdies on the front and shoot even-par 36 on the back.

“I knew I had to bounce back somehow, Amann said. “I knew hitting greens would be the main thing out there and that's what I started doing.

Cahill finished in a tie for fourth with Fremd's Brian Bodolay. Buffalo Grove freshman Doug Ghim took medalist honors with a 69 ahead of Barrington's Nick Schiavi (70) and Lake Zurich's Mike Nutter (71).

“I hit the ball tremendously but I just couldn't make anything (putting), Cahill said. “I wish I could have scored a little better but my happiness for the team overrides everything.

Cary-Grove sophomore Jarrett Kinney couldn't have picked a better time to break 80 for the first time in an 18-hole tournament. Kinney shot a 3-over 75 to finish in a tie for eighth with Barrington's Marc Ackermann.

“I was actually pretty nervous but the first couple of holes were good, said Kinney, whose previous best was 81. “My goal was to make it to conference (top six on the team) but I didn't think I'd do this well. It's a great surprise.

Kinney's teammate Zack Thompson also qualified for the sectional with an 80.

Dundee-Crown's Anthony Cardelli claimed the 10th and final individual qualifier berth on the first hole of a playoff with teammate Jeff Allen and Palatine's Cully Leverenz. They all shot 83s.
