At least one tornado confirmed near Huntley after Wednesday’s storms
National Weather Service meteorologists have confirmed at least one tornado touched down near Huntley during Wednesday’s round of severe storms.
The strength of the tornado is still being determined, but it will likely be on the mild side once storm survey teams finish their investigation, weather service meteorologists said.
They are also checking to see if the tornado tracked through Carpentersville and Bartlett as well, other areas that sustained damage in the storm.
The National Weather Service has tracked 151 tornadoes in Illinois so far this year, shattering the record of 142 set in 2024 with six months to go in the year.
Winds damaged trees and downed power lines at multiple locations in Bartlett, just two weeks after a tornado hit the town and caused minor damage to a strip mall.
Village President Dan Gunsteen called Wednesday’s storm a “1-2 punch” from Mother Nature after the June 12 tornado.
Multiple intersections and roads were temporarily closed as workers removed debris and secured power lines.
Bartlett resident Dan Lesser and his family were inside their home on the 200 block of Morse Avenue when the winds picked up Wednesday evening and knocked over a massive tree in his front yard, which tumbled onto the southeast corner of the house.
Lesser said branches tore through the house, into the attic, bathroom and other living areas, causing significant damage to the residence.
Bartlett Fire Protection District Chief William Gabrenya said fire crews began receiving service calls at about 6:30 p.m. and handled 38 “storm-related incidents” over the course of the night.
“Our crews worked throughout the evening to quickly assess hazards, protect lives and property, and ensure residents remained safe during challenging conditions,” Gabrenya said.
The department was assisted by Bartlett police and Hanover Township Emergency Services.
Many residents reported power outages in the wake of the storm, but ComEd was reporting about 14 lingering outages in the area. Outages were also reported in Hanover Park, Streamwood, Bloomingdale and Elgin.
Weather service meteorologists said the storms also caused flood damage in parts of Cook, DuPage and Will counties in Illinois as well as parts of Northwest Indiana.
Hail damage was also reported around Huntley, Carpentersville, Bartlett and Elgin, according to the weather service.
