Schaumburg woman queen of Polish fundraising ball
A Schaumburg woman was been named Queen of the White and Red Ball, the Legion of Young Polish Women’s major fundraiser.
Irina Cholewinski-Horwath, 20, is the daughter of Carol and the late Lawrence Horwath of Schaumburg. She hopes to become a physician.
The Legion of Young Polish Women was created Sept. 2, 1939, the day after Germany invaded Poland, launching World War II.
The original goal of the organization was to help civilians and soldiers during the war, but it has continued as a charitable organization.
Each year, a young debutante who raises the most funds for the organization becomes the Queen of the Ball. There were 12 competing for the honor this year. The funds raised are donated to various charitable and cultural organizations that celebrate Polish and American heritage.
The White and Red Ball, one of the most prestigious events for the Polish community in Chicago, this year was held Feb. 18.
